You can win it though, you just need a Blood mage in your party. If your PC is a Blood mage, you can pretty much solo that fight on the highest difficulty. I never went that far, but I have beaten it on Nightmare. You miss out on a side branch quest and then the game goes on as normal if you beat them. 3.
The console just checks if you have a valid licence when you play and that's it. So you can just buy the DLC and play it with the EA Play / gamepass version. But the DLC is quite expensive. The cheapest way would be to buy the physical 'Dragon Age Origins - Ultimate edition' of the game. Just insert the 2.DVD and it will install the DLC.
Like it's been said, Awakening is the #1 essential DLC, followed by Witch Hunt. Golems of Amgarrak shows what happens to a particular mage in DA2 but ultimately doesn't affect the story. In Dragon Age 2, however, you'll really want to get the Legacy DLC. It's the entire reason for the Inquisition.
Yes you can just buy it from the xbox marketplace directly on the xbox, that is exactly what I did. And that is wrong about the DLC, who ever told you that. The DLC works just fine. I bought all of the DLC myself and used it also.
My only advice is in the darkspawn dlc. You can control an ogre for a bit. If the first one makes it to the end without any dying you get an achievement, but if it dies your console will never be able to get the achievement. On pc I imagine you make a new steam account or something. r/dragonage.
I'm constructing my recommendation so op doesn't have to spend much money on all the dlc. Rather than saying all the dlc minus Darkspawn Chronicles is important because of lore, pick out a few that actually give the good experience of Origins
Awakening is an added campaign for Dragon Age. While Dragon Age will take you about 40-60 hours Awakening will only take you 10-20 hours depending on how fast you move. This should be played after Dragon Age. You will hear about this stuff on the boards and on the walkthrough.
Source: DA Wiki (Page contains spoilers for DA:O, DA:A, DLC, and DA2) The Witch Hunt flag might be important in DA3, but at this point we don't even know if saves will be imported the same way. We might just pick what choices we made before the start of DA3.
